The local hero and MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi beats Maverick Vinales to take pole position at his home grand prix in Mugello.
Rossi post a perfect lap of 1:46.504 ahead of Suzuki’s Maverick Viñales by 0.094s, with Ducati’s Andrea Iannone in third, who led during practice and early session of qualifying.
Marc Márquez will start from fourth, as reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo only made fifth fastest.
Aleix Espargaró secured progression from Q1 and finished sixth, ahead of Honda’s Dani Pedrosa and Tech 3 rider Bradley Smith. Pramac pair Danilo Petrucci and Scott Redding completed the top 10.
For the first time since 2008, Rossi will line up on pole position in Mugello. 2008 was the last time he won at the Italian track and with the winner of the last eight races coming from pole, it certainly seems like the planets are aligning for Rossi.
For the first time since 2009, Rossi has managed to poles in a single season.
